I know so many people who have trouble with backgrounds because of perspective or where the foreground should be placed. I totally understand. The best thing to do is to get a another colored ballpoint pen, and do some cross hatching. Another idea would be to use graphite or a pencil, and smudge it around the foreground. Last idea would be to take this image into Photoshop, Windows paint, or a website like Photobucket.com/DeviantArt's sta.sh where anyone could have fun to color. These are just options while designing a background seems difficult at this moment. Lucky for you, you are not being forced to do a background like at the Institute that I go to.

The jacket is well done. However, there should be something in the background because there is way too much negative space around the guy. One thing that could be done is to crop the image to reduce the time of working on the background.
