Looking like nature's version of a fast jet interceptor this is a Bee Fly. They are rare in this part of Scotland but I managed to get very close to it for this photo

The fuzzy body and swept-back wings really do make it look like a tiny interceptor. Getting this close to such a rare visitor was a great catch.
