Graphite is an unforgiving medium because of it's sobriety, to unleach it's full artistic potential demands great care and patience in handling it. You seemingly have these qualities. Portrait is the most difficult genre in drawing and painting, keep it up you are not so far from excellence. It would be worth your time and effort, I encourage you to keep at it.
