A brilliant use of value contrast to give depth and form. the bichromatic color scheme adds a wonderful vivid harshness while still feeling lively

This is not only a poem but also a sad one.Dark heavy colors,the gloomy sky,the single figure man with his oxen...all seem to say sadness and loneliness.The viewer is left to ask himself:is this an old parent that lost his children and now is working alone the land(another metaphor for life) or is the entire painting a metaphor for life in general-we are all alone after all and we have to struggle with life by ourselves.
