After Edward and his brother, Alphonse, tried and failed to resurrect their mother through an illegal human transmutation, Ed lost his left leg and Alphonse's entire body was taken from him. Ed then sacrificed his right arm to affix his brother's soul to a nearby suit of armor so that he wouldn't be lost to the world. He then had his arm and leg replaced with "Automail" prosthetics so that he could travel the world with his brother to find the legendary Philosopher's Stone, a stone with the ability to ignore the "Law of Equivalent Exchange", and restore their bodies.
